The School of Arts & Sciences offers a unique environment where students can learn in an atmosphere of intellectual challenge and support. A faculty of approximately 30 full-time and 45 part-time professors provide academic supervision to the 320 students enrolled in the School. Undergraduate programs in the traditional disciplines of the liberal arts and sciences and a number of professionally oriented fields are offered to students who have the ability, motivation, and talent to succeed in a competitive academic setting.
The School’s Liberal Arts Core Program provides a well-balanced preparation in the liberal arts. Strong internship and cooperative education programs allow students to earn credit while working in various career-oriented settings such as the United Nations, the New York Stock Exchange, radio and television networks, museums, and advertising agencies.
The School of Arts & Sciences constantly reaffirms the value of a liberal arts education and supports a diverse student body that lives, works, and studies together in an atmosphere designed to support personal and professional goals. Statement of Aims
The College of New Rochelle was founded in 1904 as a Catholic liberal arts college for women by the religious of the Ursuline Order, internationally known for their commitment to the education of women. The College holds its charter from the State of New York and is governed by its Board of Trustees. At present, the College comprises four schools - the School of Arts & Sciences, the Graduate School, the School of New Resources, and the School of Nursing. The School of Arts & Sciences welcomes both women and men as of September 2016.
The School of Arts & Sciences has preserved its tradition of offering a strong liberal arts education. The concrete implications of this type of education can be summarized in terms of the School’s commitment to academic excellence, the development of values, and the provision of an education directed toward the needs of students today.
In its pursuit of academic excellence, the School of Arts & Sciences places special emphasis on the development of those intellectual skills which typify an educated person. These include the ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively, to construct a systematic and logical argument, to think analytically and critically, to handle quantitative methods with competence, to apply knowledge concretely and creatively, and to perceive the relationship between facts and ideas, as well as between different types of ideas. The School seeks to foster in its students a genuine respect for knowledge and a continuous desire to learn, which will make the pursuit of knowledge a lifelong activity.
Believing that education must by its very nature involve values, the School is committed to the development of religious, aesthetic, moral, and personal values. The School of Arts & Sciences emphasizes an awareness of the importance of the Judaic-Christian heritage as a fundamental part of our culture. The School also promotes an understanding of the religious elements in human life and the role of faith in the formation and actualization of values.
Aesthetic values enrich our lives, and the School fosters an understanding of the arts. The School also seeks to help students develop an awareness of the wide range of possible moral choices and the methods of discriminating among these choices on the basis of a personal system of values. Moreover, the breadth and diversity of experience offered by the School of Arts & Sciences encourages the development of tolerance, respect for individual differences, and sensitivity to the needs of others. Finally, the School seeks to provide an environment in which the students can grow in maturity, responsibility, and the capacity to render service to the human community.
The School of Arts & Sciences admits both freshmen and transfer students. In keeping with the goal of providing an individualized education for each of its students, the School strives to evaluate all applicants on the basis of their academic achievements, personal accomplishments, talents, and future goals.

The College of New Rochelle is a selective institution and we seek to enroll students that desire the benefits of a private College grounded in the Catholic tradition. Each application is reviewed and judged on the merits of the individual. Successful applicants must demonstrate the intellectual and academic ability to succeed. The Admission Committee seeks to enroll the strongest and most diverse class possible.
Students who show evidence of leadership, special talents or interests and other personal qualities through extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and other non-academic pursuits will receive special consideration.
Our 2016-2017 admitted students typically had:

3 units of a Foreign Language
- SAT or ACT Standardized test scores .
- It is strongly required that a written statement of the candidate’s academic and personal qualities be prepared by the principal, guidance counselor, teacher, coach or employer and submitted with the transcript.
- Applicants may submit an essay or personal statement along with any other information in support of their application.
Regular Admission Decision
The College of New Rochelle accepts applications on a rolling admission decision policy prior to the start of the applicants senior year in high school. An application complete and ready for review consists of :
- High School Transcript
- SAT or ACT Standardized Test Scores
- Letters of Recommendation (optional)
- Essay (optional)
Admitted students intending to enroll at The College of New Rochelle should submit their enrollment deposit by May 1 and are required to submit their final, official high school transcript by July 15. The final, official transcript must include the date of graduation.
While not usually required, an interview is highly recommended. The interview enables the applicant to receive further information about the College and enhances their admission credentials through the oral presentation of additional strengths or talents. A transfer student at The College of New Rochelle is defined as anyone who has matriculated at an accredited two year or four year institution prior to matriculating at The College of New Rochelle. Transfer applicants will be evaluated based on their college-level work. Transfer applicants who have not earned an Associate’s Degree will be required to submit their final, official high school transcript prior to enrolling at the College to demonstrate their successful educational path. Although not considered in the admission review, for those with an Associate degree, students must provide proof of High School graduation (i.e. transcript, diploma) or a GED in order to be considered for Financial Aid.
Course-by-course credit evaluation will be completed once a transfer applicant has been admitted to The College of New Rochelle. Transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities are required to complete an application and credit evaluation. To be considered for a transfer merit-based scholarship, a transfer applicant must have earned at minimum of 12 college credits. Transfer students may also apply for state and federal financial aid by submitting their FAFSA to The College of New Rochelle using the school code 002704.

- If you have earned fewer than 24 credits at the time of application, your high school transcripts and SAT may be requested.
In general, all courses completed with grades of C- or better and similar to those found in this catalog will be considered for transfer, up to a maximum of 75 credits.Transfer students who have completed an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree with a minimum of 60 credits will be granted junior status. The official transcript must indicate that the Associate degree was earned. Students who enroll without an associates degree must submit their final, official high school transcript with date of graduation to satisfy their enrollment.
For students with Associates degrees from institutions with which the School of Arts & Sciences has articulation agreements, the liberal arts core requirements will usually be satisfied. For students with the Associate in Arts Degree from other institutions, the liberal arts core requirements will be satisfied, assuming the skills requirements in mathematics and writing are also met. In addition, if a student would like to receive credit for an elementary level foreign language taken at another institution, two semesters of that foreign language are needed to transfer credits.
Transfer students who are deemed to have fulfilled the liberal arts core are encouraged, but not required, to complete the 3-credit INS400 Viewpoints course. For course descriptions please refer to “Viewpoints” under the Liberal Arts Categories in this catalog.
The transfer student must usually complete one half of her major and minor courses at The College of New Rochelle. In addition, 30 of the credits required in residence must be completed on the junior or senior level.
A transfer student intending to pursue an art major is required to show the Chairperson of the Art Department a portfolio of her work to determine her proficiency.
Offers of admission are conditional, pending receipt of all official records showing successful completion of academic work in progress, and proof of high school graduation or GED.
Students who have submitted their enrollment deposit to The College of New Rochelle have the option to defer their enrollment for up to one year. You may do so by notifying, in writing, the Office of Admission that you will be deferring your enrollment from the semester for which you originally applied. Included in your letter, please indicate the semester that you intend to begin your study at CNR as well as the reason for your deferment. Throughout the time of your deferment, students are prevented from enrolling in and taking classes at any other college. Should you attend another institution, your acceptance at CNR will be null-and-void and you will not be refunded for your enrollment deposit. Additionally, you will need to re-apply for any future terms.
Students who have withdrawn from the College, or who have not attended for more than two semesters, and wish to be considered for readmission must contact the Office of the Dean, School of Arts & Sciences. In addition, official transcripts of any college-level work completed following withdrawal from The College of New Rochelle must be submitted. Students who are returning to the School of Arts & Sciences after having stopped out for more than two years need to fulfill the liberal arts core and major requirements that are in force at the time of their reentry.
Criminal and Disciplinary History
The College of New Rochelle (“College”) reserves the right to deny, revoke and/or place conditions on the admission/enrollment of any applicant or student who has been convicted of a felony, convicted of a sex offense requiring registration with the New York Division of Criminal Justice Services, or who has been dismissed from an institution of higher education for disciplinary reasons. Applicants/students will not be denied admission/enrollment based solely on the disclosure of a conviction or prior disciplinary dismissal. The College will conduct a case-by-case analysis and a denial or dismissal will be based on a determination of whether the individual presents “an unreasonable risk to property or to the safety or welfare of specific individuals or the general public.” (New York State Corrections Law § 752).
Penalty for Failure to Disclose
An enrolled student who has failed to disclose that he/she has been convicted of a felony, convicted of a sex offense requiring registration with the Division of Criminal Justice Services, or dismissed from an institution of higher education for disciplinary reasons will be subject to the College’s code of conduct process resulting in possible sanctions including suspension or expulsion.
An applicant who has failed to disclose that he/she has been convicted of a felony, convicted of a sex offense requiring registration with the Division of Criminal Justice Services, or dismissed from an institution of higher education for disciplinary reasons will be denied admission or will have any previously granted admission revoked.
Some state laws and licensure requirements bar the issuing of a license to an individual who has been convicted of a felony. Consequently, such individuals may not be eligible for admission into certain academic majors/programs. Additionally, some academic programs may include requirements that an applicant may not be eligible to meet based on his/her prior conviction.
The above policy shall not apply to youthful offender adjudications or sealed records.
Credits Earned Through Examination
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
The School of Arts & Sciences allows a maximum of 15 credits toward the degree only for entering students who have successfully passed examinations in the College-Level Examination Program (sponsored by the Educational Testing Service). For CLEP General Examinations (offered in the areas of English composition, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences-history) the recommendations of the Commission of Accreditation of Service Experience of the American Council on Education will be followed in the determination of passing scores. For CLEP Subject Examinations, the recommendations of the Council on College-Level Examinations will be followed in making this determination. CLEP credits may be used to fulfill requirements in the major field only with the approval of the department chairperson.
International Baccalaureate Diploma
Applicants who have completed International Baccalaureate (IB) courses may apply for a maximum of 18 credits. The credits will be awarded for courses with scores of at least 5. With the receipt of official results, IB credits may be applied to the skills competencies of the School, or to the liberal arts core requirements, or to general electives.
Candidates may submit scores on Advanced Placement examinations of the College Board. Three credits may be awarded for a grade of 3 or 4 on the Advanced Placement examinations; six credits may be awarded for a grade of 5. Credits awarded for Advanced Placement courses may be applied to the skills competencies of the School, or to the requirements in the Liberal Arts Core Program, or to elective courses (see catalog summary of the Liberal Arts Core Program ).
Students whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting a TOEFL or IELTS score report. Official transcripts are required from all colleges attended. Transcripts from institutions outside of the United States must be officially translated and evaluated by a NACES member evaluative service. These documents must be submitted before an official admissions decision can be made. International students must submit a Certification of Finances to enable the College to issue an I-20 form. In addition, students with F-1 student visa and obtained a Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant F-1 student status through the Registrar’s Office must visit the Registrar’s Office when they first arrive to campus.
Adults, who are interested in beginning or completing the undergraduate degree, or in registering for an occasional special-interest course, are welcome at the School. Students may enter as degree candidates or as non-matriculated students on either a full-time or part-time basis. Those seeking to matriculate should make application through the Admission Office; those seeking entrance on a non-matriculated basis should make application to the Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences.
Adults are also served by the School of Nursing and Healthcare Professions - which offers an undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing; a graduate program leading to a Master of Science degree; and a program of study for R.N.s and transfer students seeking the B.S.N. or M.S. degree. The College’s Graduate School programs reflect a service orientation in the fields of general and special education, school administration, art education and therapy, studio art, psychology, gerontology, communication arts, teaching English to speakers of other languages, career development, and guidance and counseling. Although most graduate courses are offered on the New Rochelle campus, many are given at sites in the metropolitan area and most classes meet in the evenings or on weekends.
