LAC 101 - Introduction to Latin American and Caribbean Studies

3 cr.
Latin America and the Caribbean constitute a complex region full of contrasts and its population is both racially and culturally heterogeneous. Its many countries share cultural roots and political origins, but also have distinct histories. The meaning of the expression “Latin America” is the starting point for this course. Students will search for an answer by examining historical, geographical, political, economic, social, and cultural aspects. They will also study the successes, failures, contrasts, and future challenges facing the region. This is an interdisciplinary course with a particular emphasis on history and historical interpretation and culture. Key topics include class, race, gender, colonialism, dependency and intervention, repression, resistance and revolution, arts, music, and literature.
