ARH 496 - The Artist Mystique: The Representation of the Artist in Modern Times

3 cr.
The seminar explores the representation of the artist and how these representations have been transformed through both self-representation and modern media. Beginning with romantic definitions of the artist and ending in the post-modern era of identity construction, this class will explore the ways artists have presented themselves to the public through self-portraiture and artistic self-fashioning and how these performances of identity interact with definitions of artistic practice and shifting interpretations of the self-expression and subjectivity.  At the same time, the seminar will also investigate how the modern artistic identity is constructed and determined through popular culture, in particular in film and fiction. The intersection of these two narratives, one from personal exploration and the other from public discourse will then be discussed in relation to the current artistic fascination with the fluidity of identity and the performance of the self.
