The Media Arts program prepares students to meet the demands of a dynamic, rapidly changing media landscape. We offer training in video production, public relations, sports communication, film, advertising and online journalism, with the goal of preparing students for 21st century media jobs. Our classes enable students to generate content in a variety of formats, and include video, animation, online publishing, digital cinema, gaming, and journalism. The projects developed by our students include news and information, marketing, strategic communication and entertainment.
In addition, the Media Arts program provides a lens for social and cultural analysis of media trends. Traditional broadcast and print media are evolving in response to the explosion of digital technology and alternate media platforms. Electronic tools enabling content creation and distribution are surging in popularity and use. Social media outlets, from Facebook to YouTube, have changed how and where we communicate. In what ways have technologies as powerful as mobile devices redefined the way we work and play?
Internships & Study Abroad
Internships are key to the success of students in our program. With hundreds of placements at prominent sites in the media capital of New York City, students gain first-hand experience, contacts and insight about industry practices. Internships extend the reach of the classroom by providing students training in a specific profession. In addition, the CNR Study Abroad program gives Media Arts students the opportunity to study in another country, including the option to intern in a host country.
During one-on-one advisement with Media Arts faculty, students choose classes with career goals guiding their development. Media companies are looking for directors, production assistants, graphic designers, writers, editors, on air talent, and researchers. Corporations and not for profit organizations increasingly need talented digital media strategists who are trained in multiple digital platforms. Social media entrepreneurs, interactive designers, video producers and editors, game designers and data storytellers create content for internet marketing, publicity, information, sports and entertainment. The Department offers students hands-on access to cutting-edge technology to prepare for careers or further study. During their four years, Media Arts students become increasingly effective communicators by using digital media technologies in creative, strategic and expressive ways.
Students from other colleges will receive full credit for approved major courses, after consultation with the department chair.
