The Religious Studies Department is dedicated to open inquiry into religion and theology as one of the significant areas of human life and as one key to our understanding of the world. Because religion is embedded in most of the world’s history, literature, and social institutions, its study offers access to a range of past and present human concerns. The major is invited to share in this study to develop critical and responsible standards of judgment and to gain an appreciation of the spiritual element in life. Because of the College’s Catholic origins and heritage, the department offers some courses that focus on theology in the Roman Catholic tradition. There are also courses on other religious traditions, as well as courses that concentrate on particular facets of religious meaning and value.
