The focus of the Physical Education Department is consistent with the College’s mission to prepare its students to pursue a higher quality of life and to strive for self-actualization. A major emphasis is to provide opportunities for personal development and growth through the acquisition of motor skills, attainment of knowledge, development of positive attitudes toward physical activity, and understanding the concepts of the dimensions of wellness. The diversity of the curriculum promotes and provides opportunities for the students to engage in physical activities and to acquire knowledge that will encourage them to practice lifelong health-enhancing behaviors. In addition to the traditional courses, the department includes wellness courses which focus on wellness management, stress management, sexuality, personal relationships, weight management, healthy eating and health promotion. Healthy Eating, Stress Management, Cooking for Health, and Wellness Management courses will present students with information and skills that will prepare them to make informed decisions for life after college.

Students are required to complete four courses in Physical Education. Students with disabilities will be accommodated through non-physical activities courses. Student athletes who participate in the intercollegiate athletics program may utilize two seasons on an intercollegiate team to fulfill two courses in physical education.

The faculty consists of a full-time chairperson and approximately eight adjunct faculty members who specialize in their area. This specialization enhances the quality of teaching and creates a positive learning environment for the students.
