Legal Studies Certificate

Return to Certificate Programs Return to: Certificate Programs

We believe that we can better help our students prepare for careers in the legal profession by creating an academic certificate program that enables them to systematically acquire the skills and values which are recognized within the profession as necessary for successful careers and education in the field.

The Legal Studies Certificate program seeks to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences, both within the classroom and in the community, to become more aware of legal issues and their impact on society, and to be more prepared for careers in the legal profession.

Each student pursuing the Legal Studies Certificate will select courses and arrange internship opportunities under the advisement of the Legal Studies Director. In conjunction with academic coursework as outlined below, each student in the program will engage in one or more internship placements. These internships may be with private attorneys, public interest law organizations, district attorneys, legal aid societies, the courts or other placements approved by the Director.

Students may elect to pursue the Legal Studies Certificate in conjunction with any major within the School of Arts & Sciences.

The requirement for the Legal Studies Certificate consists of 16 credit hours in the following courses:

Note:

A list of internship sites will be available. Other sites must be approved by the director of the program.
