Accelerated M.A. in Art Education

This program is designed for The College of New Rochelle’s Art Education majors who in their junior year of the undergraduate program elect to begin graduate course work towards the MA degree in Art Education leading to NYS Teaching Certification in the Visual Arts K-12.  Upon completion of the BS/BFA degree, students will qualify for the Initial NYS Teaching Certification in the Visual Arts K-12, and upon completion of the MA degree in Art Education will have fulfilled the academic requirements for the Professional NYS Teaching Certification in the Visual Arts K-12.

Criteria for Admission 

  1. Cumulative grade index of at least 3.0 (B)
  2. Letter of recommendation from the SAS Art Department faculty advisor.
  3. Studio portfolio of 10 artworks.
  4. Signed statement of academic integrity and graduate writing sample.
  5. Interview with the Graduate Art Education Faculty Advisor.
  6. Students can apply to take graduate courses once they have successfully completed at least 45 credits toward their undergraduate program.

 

Course Schedule

Students accepted into the program receive the BS or BFA degree in Art Education and Initial NYS Certification in the Visual Arts K-12, and upon successful completion of the MA degree in Art Education in the Graduate School program will also have fulfilled the academic requirements for the Professional NYS Teaching Certification in the Visual Arts K-12. The full MA degree program can be completed in one year after the completion of the bachelor’s degree if the student enters the fifth year having completed 9 graduate credits as an undergraduate student, and subsequently completes 9 credits during the fall, 9 credits during the spring and 9 credits during the summer of the students fifth year of enrollment.

Undergraduate students will follow the BS or BFA Art Education program checklist with the following changes in their 3rd- 5th years:

Art History   

AHS 582 History of Contemporary Art will replace ARH 375 - Art Since 1945 3 cr.             

Liberal Studies

AED 521 History & Philosophy of Art Education will replace EDU 118 - Orientation to Teaching 3 cr.  

Art Education 
AED 602 Art for Special Needs will replace  EDU 120 - Education of Students with Diverse Needs 3 cr.  

        

Upon completing all course work in the SAS Art Education program, students will take the following courses in the Graduate School Art Education program:

 

AED 503         Seminar: Contemporary Issues in Art Education 3 credits

AED 603         Computer Graphics & Technology in the Art Classroom 3 credits

AED 604         Curriculum Design & Assessment in Art Education 3 credits

AED 606         Aesthetic Dev & Visual Culture 3 credits

AED 651         Research Methodology for Art Education 3 credits

AED 715         Thesis 3 cr.

3 Graduate level Studio Art electives 9 cr.
